Plan long term friendship building with donors. It’s a mistake to immediately follow-up a donation receipt with a donation request and worse to hit that donor with multiple requests via phone, e-mail, and direct mail after that receipt. Spend time planning your campaign with long term ‘friendship building’ in mind. People like to donate on their own terms and even if they believe in your cause, feeling guilted or pressured is a turn-off. So consider following a donation with a simple thank you note or an email of recent successes your organization has achieved and no matter how tempting, avoid further donation suggestions until next time.
